REAL TIME VEHICLES AVERAGE SPEED CALCULATION ON HIGHWAYS USING RASPBERRY PI









Abstract

To avoid accidents on highways due to crashes of vehicles on roads, a robust real time system is needed. This paper offers a real-time low-cost system to reduce unwanted accidents on highways due to speeding. The system present here uses the application of image processing to detect, track and calculate average speed of moving vehicles. It is capable of finding accurate vehicle volume in an area of interest. Raspberry Pi with Pi camera has been used to record real time flow of vehicles on roads. Pi cameras were set with its maximum resolution to record video and send back the recorded data to raspberry pi for processing. The algorithms for speed measurement were coded using C++ programming language. The acquired data was sent to the cloud for storage using the GSM module. This work is helpful to avoid vehicle crashes and save lives. The systems were compared to existing systems and were found cost effective and robust.
